An Arezzo court has sentenced
a friar, Father Gratien Alabi, to 27 years in jail for murdering
and disposing of the body of Guerrina Piscaglia in 2014.
The court on Monday evening found the Congolese friar
guilty of the murder of the 50-year-old woman, who disappeared
from the town of Ca Raffaell near Arezzo on May 1, 2014.
Her body was never found.
Prosecutor Marcio Dioni had asked for a 27-year jail term.
Alabi, a parish priest in the central town, at the border
between Emilia-Romagna and Marche, had pleaded not guilty.
Evidence against him included a text message the friar sent
to a contact from the victim's cell phone after her
disappearance, which only he knew, and allegations made by Alabi
that investigators found to be untrue.
