Two students were hurt by plaster that fell from the ceiling of a school in Rho near Milan Friday, emergency services said. The boy and girl, both aged 13, were taken to hospital in Rho. Another girl student in the third-year class of the Alessandro Manzoni secondary school was also hit but was not hurt. The incident cam amid an ongoing row over the safety of Italian school buildings.
President Sergio Mattarella, said Friday a government plan to make Italian schools safe should be implemented as soon as possible "and with the utmost effectiveness possible". Mattarella said "Italian schools have certain shortfalls and problems to be overcome, including safety and the adequate quality of buildings and classrooms." He said "the government's decision to earmark major new sums to secure school buildings is certainly to be appreciated". Premier Matteo Renzi has vowed to make all Italian schools safe from earthquakes after the August 24 quake that killed 297 people and caused massive damage in Lazio and Marche, also to school buildings. He has requested that this emergency spending be excluded from budgetary resources allowed under the EU's Stability and Growth Pact.
