American writer Elizabeth Strout underwent surgery at Naples' Cardarelli hospital on Friday after suffering acute appendicitis during a visit to the southern Italian city, sources said. Strout, who won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the short-story collection Olive Kitteridge, is recovering well in hospital after the successful operation. She is in Naples to receive the Malaparte prize at a ceremony scheduled to take place on Saturday.
