An 84-year-old woman was
sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for causing a gas
cylinder explosion that killed a man and wounded at least 20
people.
Giovannina Serra was found guilty of second-degree murder
and aggravated arson for causing the January 20, 2015, explosion
in a Rome flat that killed a 50-year-old male tenant and injured
at least 20.
Serra, who had been recently evicted, resisted arrest
and told police she was not sorry for causing the blast that
wrecked the Rome apartment.
The prosecution had requested a life sentence for willful
massacre for futile motives.
Serra was also sentenced to pay 300,000 euros in damages to
the victim's relatives.
