FIFA said Friday it would trial a
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the first time in Italy's
friendly with France in Bari on September 1.
It said it would be a "special test" in which the VAR "will
be able to communicate with the referee during the match, but
will not have an impact on the play as in a direct test".
So far VARS have been tested in dry runs without being able
to communicate with the ref.
VARs will be used, if approved, for game-changing decisions
like goals, red cards, penalties and mistaken identities.
Italian Soccer federation (FIGC) President Carlo Tavecchio
said the FIGC was "honoured" to host the first real VAT trial.
He said it showed how "constant and fruitful" was the FIGC's
relationship with FIFA and the International Football
Association Board (IFAB), the independent guardian of the laws
of the game.
