Interior Minister Angelino Alfano hailed Germany's decision to start taking hundreds of asylum seekers from Italy according to the EU's relocation quotas. He also praised Chancellor Angela Merkel for wanting to be on the "right side of history" in welcoming more than a million refugees, even if it might cost her votes.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said at Communion and Liberation's (CL) annual meeting in Rimini that come September, Germany "vows to welcome from Italy several hundred migrants va the relocation scheme."
He said "we hope it is a good example that can be followed". De Maiziere said that so far the work on migration with Italy had "worked well". CL is an influential Italian Catholic lay organisation.
