A female Siberian Husky named
Blanka won the 55th annual Dog Loyalty Award on Tuesday, for
saving the life of her 9-year-old owner Gianmarco.
Blanka woke Gianmarco's parents last November when he was
nearly unconscious from severe hypoglycemia, also known as
diabetic shock, during the night.
Although not specifically trained to do so, Blanka
performed similarly to dogs who can detect low blood sugar
levels by scent.
The Dog Loyalty Award began in 1962 and is announced each
year between August 12-16 in the small northern town of San
Rocco in Camogli, near Genoa.
