The Italian judiciary's self-governing body, the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM), on Friday approved new guidelines for prosecutors in the handling of wiretaps and other sensitive investigation data.
There are frequently calls for investigators' use of wiretaps to be reined in as details sometimes get leaked to the press, often embarrassing people who are not implicated in the probes.
The guidelines called for special care to be taken in the preliminary phases of a new probe, when media attention on a case tends to be highest, especially regarding the evidence used for requests and orders for arrests. The CSM also suggested that casual conversations recorded during investigations should not be transcribed but only taken note of. CSM chief Giovanni Legnini said the guidelines did not seek to "anticipate or condition" parliament, as it considers new legislation on wiretap use.
