An 80-year-old pensioner from
Brindisi sat his school-leaving certificate Monday - the diploma
Italian youths get at the end of the third year of middle
school, at the age of 14.
Antonio Pugliese is a retired farm worker who has spent his
life working in the fields.
Pugliese went back to school to set up a kitchen garden
with one of his nine children, and gradually hatched the idea of
finally getting his leaving cert.
"He was really excited, but nervous," Vincenzo Pugliese
said after his father sat the first part of the exam among the
youngsters.
A friend said: "He'll be unbeatable in history: he's had
personal experience of the last 80 years".
