Medics in a Pisa clinic have for
the first time implanted a micro-lens in a patient that cures
presbyopia, an age-related condition which causes reduced
ability to focus on near-by objects, they announced on Tuesday.
The San Rossore clinic said the procedure, which made use
of a laser to implant the lens, was the first of its kind in the
world.
"Presbyopia, when not controlled, can lead to headaches and
visual tiredness during normal day-to-day activities," said eye
doctor Marco Fantozzi, who carried out the procedure.
He said the laser used by the clinic stood apart from
others due to its precision and speed during the insertion of
the lens.
The first patient to undergo the operation was able to see
even small letters up close, 24 hours after the operation,
Fantozzi said.
He added that the intervention was reversible and caused no
damage to surrounding tissue. The lens could also be replaced
with a stronger one if needed, he said.
