Lombardy Governor Roberto Maroni
from the rightwing anti-immigrant Northern League said Monday
the center-right needs to get its act together to field a
credible mayoral candidate after Former Expo world's fair
commissioner Giuseppe Sala won the Milan center-left mayoral
primary at the weekend.
"The primaries must act as a stimulus to us to do better
and to win the June elections," said Maroni.
Also at the weekend, Democratic Party (PD) Premier Matteo
Renzi blasted accusations by the leader of the
anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) Beppe Grillo, who
alleged on his blog that Sala won thanks to the ballots of
"Chinese voters who can't read or write Italian".
Renzi replied while some do politics by manipulating "50
people" into clicking on a website, others have the guts to hold
primaries "involving thousands".
"We're the only ones with the courage to hold them," Renzi
said.
