Cabinet on Friday approved a decree enacting a 2012 European Union directive on crime victim protection. The decree would ensure victims get adequate assistance and have proper access to the justice system. This includes protection and respectful treatment during investigations and penal proceedings, and being informed of their rights and options for redress, including via translation into their language. The decree places special emphasis on the protection of minors, rape victims, and the disabled.
It also provides for the rights and protections owed the victim to be transferred to his or her spouse or life partner in case of the victim's death, and for victims to be informed any time their offender gets out of prison.
