Layoffs at Italcementi cement
maker will be 538 not 1,080, labor undersecretary Teresa
Bellanova said Thursday.
The deal to reduce job losses in Italcementi's workforce of
3,000 in the was hammered out by government, unions and
management ahead of the Bergamo-based firm's 3.7-billion-euro
takeover by German rival HeidelbergCement, which is the world's
second-biggest cement producer.
The deal will allow HeidelbergCement to expand operations
in Mediterranean, including Egypt, as well as in France and
Belgium, which together comprise Italcementi's biggest market.
Italcementi researchers famously invented I.active
Biodynamic, a sustainable cement that was showcased in the
9,000-square-meter external facade of Palazzo Italia at the Expo
world's fair this year.
The biodynamic cement - which is covered by five worldwide
patents - captures pollutants present in the air and turns them
into inert salts. It is 80% made up of recycled aggregates,
making it shinier than traditional white cement.
