Francesco Sicignano, a
pensioner who shot and killed a burglar who was trying to break
into his villa, will be a candidate for the conservative Forza
Italia party at the Milan city council in the next local
elections, the party said Friday.
Sicignano said he accepted the candidature out of admiration
of Forza Italia leader and former premier Silvio Berlusconi.
"I have lots of respect for Berlusconi who after everything
that happened decided to stay in politics for the good of the
country," Sicignano told a press conference.
"I believe Italy should be managed like a firm".
Sicignano said that in the past he had voted for the
neo-Facist Italian Social Movement (MSI) but in the last
elections he voted for Forza Italia.
"Let's work on property and the sacrosanct right to defend
it," he said.
"That doesn't mean that in Italy everyone must have guns,
only those who know how to handle them".
Sicignano is under investigation for voluntary manslaughter
after shooting Albanian Gjergi Gjonj as he was coming up the
steps to his villa near Milan on October 20.
