The prestigious library of New
York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will soon have 10 RAI Cinema
co-produced Italian films, including ones from such important
directors as Moretti, Bellocchio, Garrone and Crialese.
The selection of contemporary award-winning authors,
acclaimed in Italy and abroad, will become part of the museum.
The films are: Matteo Garrone's 'Racconto dei Racconti',
Alice Rohrwahcer's 'Le Meraviglie', Gianfranco Rosi's 'Sacro
Gra', Paolo and Vitorio Taviani's 'Cesare Deve Morire', Emanuele
Crialese's 'Terraferma', Matteo Garrone's 'Gomorra', Gianni
Amelio's 'Le Chiavi di Casa', Marco Bellocchio's 'Buongiorno,
Notte', Ermanno Olmi's 'Il Mestiere delle Armi' and Nanni
Moretti's 'La Stanza del Figlio'.
"Our Italian cinema," said RAI Cinema managing director
Paolo Del Brocco in presenting the agreement in Rome, "is in a
good period abroad, with films including small ones that go to
dozens of cinemas and festivals, receiving applause and prizes.
The initiative with MoMA fills us with pride. This all stems
from the meeting with and the interest of Roy Rajendra, the head
of the museum film department. We offered a selection and they
drew up the final list."
Del Brocco said that "the next concrete target will have to
be systematically organize our Italian cinema abroad with strong
coordination and companies that already work abroad, trying to
make a strategic plan for cultural production abroad. Something
is moving forward, through arduously. Though we all agree on the
valorization and internationalization of our cinema, there is
the issue of investment and the will to do more."
It is at MoMA that the 'Italian Film, 21st-Century Style'
will begin on December 4. A tribute to RAI Cinema, with the
screening for the first time in the US of 'Racconto dei
Racconti', in the presence of director Garrone.
RAI Cinema will also be holding - from Saturday, December 5
to Tuesday, December 8 - three events to promote and valorize
the image of Italian creativity and identity through cinema.
The latter will include a photographic book published by RAI
Eri) with shots from the best of the 10 films selected; the
screening of 'Non Essere Cattivo' by Caludio Caligari as part of
a promotional drive for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film
category, in the presence of producer Valerio Mastandrea; the
screening of the 'Sono Cosa Nostra' by Simone Aleandri, made by
RAI Cinema and the anti-mafia association Libera; and the
screening of the documentary 'Esuli-Le Guerre' by Barbara
Cupisti.
Partners of the event include the Italian consulate and the
New York Italian Institute of Culture as well as Cinecittà
Studios, which with Cinecittà Digital Factory worked on 5 of the
10 films in the MoMA permanent collection.
