(see related)Ex-Naples mayor Antonio Bassolino said Monday he agrees with Premier Matteo Renzi when he said rules musn't change. "I agree with Renzi: you don't change the rules - he said so October 21," Bassolino said.
The Democratic Party (PD) has said it will introduce a rule banning ex-mayors from running for mayor, as Bassolino wants to do.
Bassolino last Saturday announced he would run in the PD primaries in the spring, and launched his campaign Monday in spite of opposition from his own center-left PD.
"If they wanted to change the rules they should have done so before and not now after the train has already left the station," Bassolino, a veteran politician, told reporters at his first campaign appearance.
"Renzi himself is a child of the primaries," Bassolino pointed out. "(Former PD chief Pier Luigi) Bersani, who was the incumbent, was a gentleman because he set rules that allowed Renzi to run and win".
