Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said outside the UN Security Council on Wednesday that a chink of light at the end of the tunnel is opening up for war-torn Syria. This would come in the form of a gradual political transition without leaving a power vacuum as happened in Libya and Iraq, the minister said. Also on Wednesday, the Russian parliament approved President Vladimir Putin's request for the deployment of Russian troops against the Islamic State (ISIS) fundamentalist militia in Syria after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad asked Moscow for assistance.
Russia conducted its first airstrikes in Syria near the city of Homs, CNN reported later in the day.
