Matteo Salvini, leader of
anti-immigrant, anti-euro Northern League party, on Monday said
of Premier Matteo Renzi, "a prime minister who uses a child for
his electoral campaign is a worm," speaking on Italian morning
talk show Mattino 5.
"It's squalid to insult someone who asks for certain
rules," Salvini said.
On Sunday, Renzi, leader of the centre-left Democratic
Party (PD), told an audience at a political rally that in the
immigration crisis, "it's not the PD against the right, it's
humans against beasts".
Renzi also showed a picture of Aylan, the Syrian child who
was found last week washed up on a Turkish beach after having
drowned in a Mediterranean crossing with his family.
Salvini on Sunday responded on Twitter to Renzi's comment
by referring to Renzi as an "incompetent blabbermouth" who's
"afraid, nervous, insults millions of Italians".
"I'm a beast because I defend Italians? Ok then, I'm a
beast. Renzi illegal immigrant," Salvini tweeted.
