A star-studded 72nd Venice Film Festival is about to open (September 2-12) with the likes of Johnny Depp, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal Emily Watson and Amber Heard. Martin Scorsese's short film The Audition will not be screened because of "unexpected technical problems", but for the Italian fans the loss of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Venice will probably be made up by the appearance of rock singer Vasco Rossi presenting a documentary on September 11.
The festival will open on Wednesday, September 2 with Italian-Egyptian model and actress Elisa Sednaoui as a host. The jury headed by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón and composed of Emmanuel Carrère, Francesco Munzi, Diane Kruger, Lynne Ramsay, Elizabeth Banks, Jonathan Demme, Paz Vega and Anita Caprioli will walk down the red carpet the same day. Everest by Baltasar Kormákur will open the fest bringing to the Lido actors such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Emily Watson (but not Keira Knightley or Robin Wright).
Thursday, September 3rd Mark Ruffalo and Stanley Tucci are expected, but Idris Elba starring in Beasts of No Nation by Cary Fukunaga will travel to Toronto instead.
Friday, September 4, will be Johnny Depp's day. The actor has made a gangster movie, Black Mass, by Scott Cooper and there is great anticipation about his appearance by fans and photographers alike.
Saturday September 5, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will both walk the red carpet and gossip makers are bracing for images of the two formerly romantically involved stars. Juliette Binoche will arrive in Venice that same weekend to present the movie by Piero Messina, L'Attesa, accompanied by her young co-protagonist, Lou de Laâge. Saturday will also be Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne's day in Venice with his first post-Academy Award performance in The Danish Girl by Tom Hooper.
Sunday September 6, the star-studded cast of Luca Guadagnino's latest film A Bigger Splash will grace the red carpet with the likes of Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts. The following week, interlapping with the beginning of the Toronto Film Festival will be dedicated to Italian movie stars such as Valerio Mastandrea, Valeria Golino and Alba Rohrwacher.
Towards the end of the festival, musician Laurie Anderson, will present her film Heart of a Dog, while on September 10, Bruno Ganz will make an appearance for Remember by Atom Egoyan and Stacy Martin (launched by Lars Von Triers' Nymphomaniac) will appear in Taj Mahal by Nicolas Saada.
