Italian Premier Matteo Renzi on Monday welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the Expo world's fair in Milan.
Also among the welcoming party for Merkel and husband Joachim Sauer were Expo chief Giuseppe Sala, Agriculture Minister Maurizio Martina, Milan Prefect Francesco Paolo Tronca and Renzi's wife Agnese.
The Germany pavilion had to be cordoned off after a crush of people assembled to see the chancellor.
Merkel is on a private visit and there will be no press conference afterwards. But after her tour of the site Merkel is expected to confer with Renzi on economic growth, the Mediterranean migrant emergency and the Greece debt crisis.
She and her husband will dine with the Renzis.
