(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JULY 23 - The Catalan parliament on
Thursday voted with a wide majority to ban the use of wild
animals in circuses.
The prohibition - which comes five years after one on
bull-fighting - will enter into force in 2017.
It was approved as part of an animal protection law in
Catalonia with 105 in favor, 19 against and 8 abstentions.
The regulation was an initiative of several animal rights
organizations, including the Max Weber Foundation and
Libera!, and has raised the ire of the circus world.
The director of the Figueres International Circus Festival,
Genis Matabish, called it an ''attack'' on the circus.
The law also provides for the establishment of an
'observatory for animal well-being', which will also be active
in two years' time. (ANSAmed).
