Catholic charity Caritas spoke
out on Thursday against a new ordinance that limits begging in
the Alto Adige tourist town of San Lorenzo di Sebato.
"Everyone has the right to ask for alms," said local
Caritas directors Paolo Valente and Franz Kripp.
"We don't need to fight the poor, but poverty," they said,
adding that they opposed specific wording in the ordinance which
they said reads, "people who behave in a repulsive and harassing
way".
Other towns in Alto Adige, including the provincial capital
of Bolzano, have also recently tightened up bans on panhandling
in the streets.
