Protests are being held across Italy
against Premier Matteo Renzi's controversial educational reform
as it goes before the lower house of parliament.
The "Good School" bill aims to improve education via
private sector funding, by allowing schools greater autonomy and
by giving permanent open-ended contracts to thousands of
teachers on temporary contracts.
But unions are furious, saying many teachers risk being
excluded from the new system.
Protestors from the Gioventù Nazionale rightwing youth
association put up symbolic obituaries in front of schools in
Rome on Monday evening, including slogans such as "in memory of
the public school" and blocked entrances with plastic film.
