A Marsican brown bear cub
found dead on Thursday evening outside the National Park of
Abruzzo "wasn't poisoned or killed in another way," said
Riccardo Frattaroli, mayor of Settefrati, on Friday.
Frattaroli said that although there had been a recent
sighting of a mother bear with her cubs, it hadn't caused
particular alarm among the town's residents.
"I don't believe the animal was killed," Frattaroli said.
Antonio Carrara, president of the National Park of Abruzzo,
Lazio and Molise, said the bear's death "reconfirms the extreme
difficulties of conservation".
The Marsican brown bear is a highly threatened subspecies of
brown bear estimated to number only around 50, located in the
National Park of Abruzzo.
