Poroshenko asked Putin for a plan to end fighting in the east and south of Ukraine, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency.
The tanks rolled across the Russian border into rebel areas of eastern Ukraine, entering via a checkpoint controlled by rebels in the Luhansk region, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said, according to the BBC website.
There was no confirmation from the pro-Russian separatists.
