Islamist militia on Wednesday
attacked Saddam Hussein's hometown Tikrit after overrunning
Iraq's second city Mosul Tuesday.
Insurgents believed to be part of al-Qaeda offshoot the
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) took control of some
parts of Tikrit, 150km (95 miles) north of Baghdad.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has vowed to fight back
against the jihadists and punish police and soldiers who have
deserted.
ISIS controls a lot of territory in eastern Syria and
western and central Iraq.
It is trying to set up an Islamist enclave straddling the
border.
