Balkans: Albania postpones building of nuclear power plant

26 January, 11:52

(ANSAmed) - PODGORICA, JANUARY 26 - Albania has put on hold its plans to build a nuclear power plant in the Shkoder region until all issues concerning its potential impact on the environment and territory are fully resolved, according to its prime minister, Sali Berisha. ''Nuclear energy is the cleanest and most economic, but the Fukushima catastrophe dictates a reassessment of the impact in Shkoder,'' Berisha told journalists in Podgorica at the end of a talk with Montenegro's prime minister, Igor Luksic. Berisha also noted that the Shkoder zone, and the entire territory including Albania and Montenegro, are a highly active seismic zone, and for this reason the plan for a nuclear power plant will be postponed until scientific and specialist opinions on the matter are made available. The city of Shkoder is located near a lake of the same name, whose waters are divided between Albania and Montenegro. In their talk, Berisha and Luksic noted the excellent relations between Albania and Montenegro, which they see as an example of fruitful collaboration in the Balkan region. The two prime ministers agreed that the integration of the western Balkans into the European Union is in the interests of both countries and their citizens. (ANSAmed).
