(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS, OCTOBER 21 - At least 60 archaeological sites and almost unknown monuments of the wilaya (province) of Souk Ahras in Algeria have been catalogued by a team of Italian archaeologists from the University of Trento in collaboration with a group of Algerian experts. Operations for the cataloguing of sites, reports APS, have been underway since September 15 and are part of a project conducted jointly by the University of Trento and the Algerian National Archaeological Research Centre which aims to draw up a map of the individual sites in the country's eastern regions. An initial cataloguing was carried out in Souk Ahras in 2009 and the campaign underway has been extended to the territories of the villages Ouled Driss, M'daourouch, Taourit and Drea.

The most interesting aspect of the team's works, which make use of digitalisation processes for data gathering, is that most of the sites catalogued are farms, houses and oil mills, as well as the control tower network dating back to the Byzantine era found not far from the city of Taourit.
