(ANSAmed) - PALERMO, FEBRUARY 6 - Sicily has a unique heritage: the Islamic civilisation which was present on the island for a century. The event ''Islam in Sicily: a garden between two civilisations'' focuses on this historic memory. It opened on February 3 and will remain open until May in Palermo and Gibellina (Trapani), organised by the regional Tourism Councillor's Office and the Orestiadi Foundation in Gibellina. The event documents Sicily's social, cultural and artistic relation with the Islam and the continuous exchanges that took place over time that still have an impact on Mediterranean culture. The project has a busy schedule of activities that range from exhibitions on Islam, conferences and concerts, to a recital of Arab poetry and an initiative regarding the historical figure of Giufa that involves schools in the area.

The highlight of the event is an exhibition on the Islam, held from March 30 to May 9 in the Baglio Di Stefano in Gibellina, divided in four sections: ethno-anthropology, archaeology, artistical and multi-media installations and modern art. Meanwhile, an exhibition on the Persian calligraphies of maestro Mohammad Salahshour was opened last Friday in the stables of 'Castello della Cuba' in Palermo. On February 24, on the same location the conference ''For a geo-cultural map of the Mediterranean'' will be held. On February 25, 9pm in the Maredolce in Palermo Arab poetry will be put in the spotlights: six poets, four from Mediterranean countries and two from Sicily, will recite poetry. (ANSAmed).
