(ANSAmed) - REGGIO CALABRIA, FEBRUARY 13 - The Enpi Med Algae
research project has started. The project is funded by the
European Union and involves 12 organisations and research
centres in the Mediterranean area (Cyprus, Greece, Malta,
Lebanon, Egypt and Italy).
The project was discussed in the past days in a meeting in
Nicosia (Cyprus). In the project, a group of researchers,
Giuseppe Bombino, Pietro Denisi, Vincenzo Tamburino, Demetrio
Zema and Santo Marcello Zimbone, working for the STAFA
Department, the research institute of the Agricultural Faculty
of the Mediterranean University in Reggio Calabria, will build
and manage one of the five high-tech pilot plants for the
cultivation of micro-algae for the production of biofuel.
The Faculty will select algae for outdoors cultivation during a
3-year period, and use them to make biodiesel and other products
with high added value.
''The project, in line with the strategic goals set by the
European Union,'' a statement issued by the Mediterranean
University reads, ''wants to give a technical and scientific
contribution to the reduction of mankind's impact on global
climate change and the use of fossil fuels. The Med Algae
project also aims to publish the results of its experiments on
the internet, and collaborate with other research centres,
companies and the public and private sector in the Mediterranean
area."
