Syria: D'Alema, EU should support Arab pressure on Russia

Military intervention unrealistic, no one wants it

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 10 - Regarding Syria, "I think that the EU must support the Arab plan and put political pressure on Russia," said Massimo D'Alema while speaking in Brussels as the president of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies in a meeting with the press after his visit to the Middle East. "Russia," added D'Alema, "cannot use its veto twice. It is necessary to be active on this front." According to the former premier, "the Arab League is the key. Western intervention that is not linked to the Arabs, who are very determined to stop the conflict and protect civilians, would be a mistake." In this context, "I think that direct military intervention," said D'Alema, "by the western powers in Syria is not possible. No one is proposing it." According to D'Alema, it is not possible to discuss an idea "that is unrealistic: working with the Arab League to rapidly move towards a solution is what needs to be done, and I think that it's possible". D'Alema explained that the Arab initiative involves "stopping the violence, deploying observers on the ground (not a small group, but hundreds and from the UN) and to manage the truce. It also involves direct negotiations between the opposition and the government for national reconciliation and transition towards democratic elections, after the Assad regime". (ANSAmed).
