(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JANUARY 5 - Former defence minister
Carme Chacon has announced his candidature for secretary general
of the Socialist party, to lead the PSOE's rejuvenation.
''I am prepared to lead a new phase in Spanish socialism,''
Chacon said during a meeting yesterday evening in the UGT union
headquarters in Valencia. The socialist representative made the
announcement ahead of the PSOE's national congress, called for
early February in Seville, where he will be facing off against
the other candidate of the general secretariat, the former
deputy prime minister and interior minister Alfredo Perez
Rubalcaba.
Carme Chacon will be officially presenting his candidature on
Saturday January 7 in the Olula del Rio municipality, where his
father was born in the Andalusia region, the last socialist
stronghold where regional elections will be held in March.
