(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JANUARY 26 - The World Tourism Organisation
(UNWTO) and the Tunisian Tourism Ministry organise an
international conference on tourism in the Mediterranean on
April 16 and 17 in Djerba. Sources in the UNWTO inform that the
initiative was announced during the Tourism Investment Forum in
Africa, Investour, held during the most recent edition of the
tourism expo in Madrid, Fitur.
UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai commented: ''Despite the
fact that the Mediterranean is the most-visited region in the
world, with over 200 million tourists arriving every year, there
are still many challenges: political, environmental and
social."Therefore the conference in Djerba ''will allow us to
make up the balance of trends in tourism in the region and adopt
a joint vision on how to deal with these challenges in an
adequate way,'' he added. At the Investur Forum, during which
Tunisia's new Tourism Minister Elyes Fakhfakh also delivered a
speech, the UNWTO secretary-general underlined that the Maghreb
city ''is coming back on stage and preparing a solid
come-back,'' and that the international conference ''cannot be
held in a better place."
The conference is attended by tour agents from the Mediterranean
area, who will discuss the possibilities of developing the
sector, facing the challenges of sustainability and competition
with other regions in the world.
