Spain: Sarkozy receives decoration for fight against ETA

16 January, 16:11

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JANUARY 16 - The assassins will have to pay and the ''Pyrenees will no longer play a role'' in the fight against ETA terrorism. This statement was made by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who today received the 'Toison de oro' (golden fleece) from King Juan Carlos. The golden fleece is the highest decoration of the Spanish Crown, awarded for France's commitment to the fight against the armed secessionist organisation ETA. Sarkozy was Interior Minister from 2005 to his election as President, and was the first French President to have dealt with the ETA problem as a French domestic security emergency as well, apart from a Spanish problem. In 2009 he pledged in the Spanish congress that he would fight the organisation on the side of the Spanish institutions. ''He has effectively established better collaboration between politics, justice and police forces of our two countries, aimed at ending terrorist violence,'' said King Juan Carlos in the award ceremony.
